The Forge
My car is back up and running again. So I took advantage of this beautiful weather we’re having and took a trip down to make a new friend, Eric.
Eric is, like me, an IT professional. But behind his home he has put together a forge where he enjoys engaging in the ancient art of blacksmithing.
I came down to take some pictures, of course, but also to see the forge and get a feel for what I might need to do to learn the art myself. Happily, Eric is quite generous with his time and knowledge, and has offered to have me join in on a workshop series with some other students at his home to learn this art.
No, I won’t be putting down the camera. But I will be picking up the hammer soon.

The forge picture is awesome. I love the warm glow in the midst of the cool green/blue hues.
Surprising what kind of hobbies people have.

Thanks. Yeah, the contrast of color tones immediately grabbed me when I got out of the car and approached the forge. It really is eye candy.
Now I’ll feel like I can start connecting my hobbies if I get good enough at blacksmithing to forge my own straight razor blade (I shave with vintage straight razors).

It still takes a good photographers eye to spot these.
Some people dislike processing, but blurring the car a bit more would make this a 10 in my book.
I bet working with hammers, iron and fire is a great change from our day’s work and probably a good way to relief stress.

You might be right about the blurring. One of the things about me is that I really dislike altering reality in post processing, though. I’ll do a little color correcting, a little cropping, a little zit removal on models. But overall, I try to get as much “right” in the camera as possible. The car in the background was part of the reality of the scene. The shot might have been better without it there but I’m averse to going to great lengths to redact it from the image.

I think the car in background is sort of fitting – you know, an example of how far steel work has come.
